Indian govt lodges complaint over Henry

Foreign Minister Murray McCully has confirmed that the Indian government has formally complained about offensive remarks from Breakfast host Paul Henry.

A You Tube clip of Henry laughing at the name of the Delhi chief minister, Sheila Dikshit, made international headlines and is dominating the press in India.

India has denounced the remarks as racist.

McCully said he would indicate to the Indian government that the comments were the actions of one person, made in a country in which freedom of speech is an important foundation principle.

But he said it is always regrettable when a prominent individual abuses the freedom of expression to cause offence to others.

"That is especially the case when the person offended against is a prominent public figure in another country," McCully said.

"The actions of Mr Henry in this case can only be described as gratuitous and insulting."

McCully said he will make it clear to the Indian government that TVNZ operates independently from the New Zealand government and any action against Henry is a matter for the company or the Broadcasting Standards Authority.

A group of American victims who were sexual abused by a priest are now protesting the Vatican and alleging that Pope Benedict XVI facilitated a cover-up while he was a bishop. Mark Phillips reports.

Pope May Be at Crossroads on Abuse, Forced to Reconcile Policy and Words

ROME — Even as Pope Benedict XVI, faced with a sexual abuse scandal spreading across Europe, has called on victims to come forward and urged clerics to cooperate with civil justice, those strong words are running up against the complexities of his past..“He is at a crossroads,” said Marco Politi, a veteran Italian Vatican journalist. “What’s extraordinary is that the scandal has reached the heart of the center of the church. Up to now it was far away — in the States, in Canada, in Brazil, in Australia. Then it came to Europe, to Ireland
